Mastering Loose Leash Walking: A Game-Changer for You and Your Dog

Posted on January 30, 2025June 26, 2025 by Almudena Ortiz Cue

Walking your dog should be a relaxing and enjoyable activity, but for many pet parents, it turns into a constant battle against pulling. Whether your dog is excited, curious, or just eager to explore, leash pulling is a common challenge. The good news? With patience, practice, and the right training techniques, you can teach your dog to walk politely on a loose leash!

Why Do Dogs Pull on Leash?

Dogs aren’t naturally inclined to walk at a human’s pace—after all, they have four legs and endless energy! Here are a few reasons why they may pull:
🐾 Excitement – The world is full of new smells, sights, and sounds!
🐾 Lack of Training – Dogs don’t instinctively know that pulling won’t get them where they want to go.
🐾 Opposition Reflex – When they feel resistance, their instinct is to pull harder.
🐾 Reinforcement – If pulling gets them closer to what they want, they’ll keep doing it.

How to Teach Loose Leash Walking

Loose leash walking doesn’t happen overnight, but with consistency and the right techniques, your dog will learn to walk beside you without tension on the leash. Here are some key strategies:

✅ Use the Right Equipment – A well-fitted harness (with a front-clip option) combined with a flat collar gives you better control while ensuring your dog’s comfort.
✅ Reward Good Behavior – Reinforce moments when your dog walks calmly at your side with treats, praise, or a favorite toy.
✅ Be Consistent – If your dog pulls and you continue walking, they learn that pulling works. Stop moving when they pull and resume only when the leash is loose.
✅ Engage Your Dog – Keep your pup focused on you with frequent check-ins, changes of pace, and fun training games.
