I created this new low-impact sport modality to increase subtle communication with our dogs as we strive to hone obedience training with precision in its execution with added elements of canine fitness.
Our teams work together, moving smoothly from one station to the next. The real challenges are twofold: completing the behaviors at each station and maintaining a strong connection with your dog as you travel together toward the next challenge.
As the teams improve in their performance, the level of challenge increases by including a faster pace while remaining connected and adding time requirements to finish the course.
Here is an example of some of the challenges/behaviors and their different levels.
Sitting
Level 1: Sit on a platform – sloppy sit.
Level 2: Sit on a platform in a sphinx (knees pointing forward, thighs parallel to the body)
Level 3: Duration- hold the sphinx for “x” seconds.
Transitions
Level 1: Walk on a semi-loose leash to the next station
Level 2: Walk to the next station on a loose leash
Level 3: Walk on a loose leash and check in with the handler
Standing
Level 1: Stand for 3 seconds without shifting the weight between legs
Level 2: Increase the duration of a solid stand up to 10 seconds
Level 3: Stand in a “stacked” position.
Level 4: Maintain the stacked position with distractions.
Movement with Precision
Level 1: Cavaletti on the ground lured to maintain focus
Level 2: Cavaeltti, less luring and trotting from point end to end
Level 3: Cavaletti, trotting, no luring, focused forward.
All teams will have access to videos of the different challenges/behaviors so that they can practice at home.
