A “conversation starter” is a set of behaviors your dog has learned well and LOVES to perform in different settings such as home, off-leash, the dog park, the coffee shop, etc. Conversation starters puts your dog in an appropriate mindset, relaxed yet engaged because they can perform them with proficiency. And proficiency indeed feels good!

A principal outcome of having regular “conversations” with your dog is that it teaches your dog that you are unpredictable (in a fun way) and worth engaging with. These are skills that most people would love to have in their lives with their dogs but seldom do since they require know-how, practice and a willingness to spend time with their dog. During our time together we will explore behaviors that fit the bill for a conversation, learn how to use important parameters such as working at a distance (from your dog) and when distractions are present.

Conversation starts are indeed the first-steps for achieving off-leash freedom with your dog! (For more on off-leash adventures please visit Safe and Fun Hiking with Your Off-Leash Dog course)
