Not survive but thrive! Thoughts after the election.

Posted on November 14, 2016June 12, 2025 by Almudena Ortiz Cue

As we try to make sense of what is in front of us as individuals and as nation after the unfathomable election for president of such a bigot, uncouth and ignorant individual, I have heard many voices speaking about “surviving” as in: “we will survive Trump…”

Surviving is not enough for me. I want to THRIVE. I want our country to thrive.

So how then do we move from surviving to thriving? What are the day to day strategies we can turn to in order to make sense of not only a new “reality,” but a dark reality for many, many people – even those who voted for this individual?

Yes, it is a week later and I am still processing the events. I am still experiencing deep sadness and anger and in the midst of all this, I am trying to THRIVE.

Some have suggested getting involved in social or political causes so that we can help in continuing with whatever policies and values matter to us- perhaps even define us. Not a bad idea I thought. If we do not get involved can we then complain?

Getting involved can imply many things. We can begin, I propose, in getting involved with life…. the even flow of daily life that is still beautiful & awe inspiring.

We can get involved with those around us that need something from us. We can get involved with those that will be deeply and negatively affected by this new government in our mist. We can (continue) to get involved with our pets. Not only is it good for them, but it is a fantastic strategy for thriving.

I don’t know about you all, but for me, my involvement with my dogs in the day to day centers me. It reminds me of what matters forcefully and deeply. This is not small. In times of crisis, we need to remain in the here and the now. We need to revolt against desperation and instead create a coalition of meaningful relations with those next to us and those we do not know.

Let’s strive to thrive, not just survive.
