How to Teach Your Dog Loose Leash Walking: A Step-by-Step Guide

Posted on January 31, 2025February 10, 2025 by Almudena Ortiz Cue

Walking your dog should be an enjoyable experience, but if your pup constantly pulls, it can turn into a frustrating struggle. Loose leash walking is an essential skill for both you and your dog, making walks safer and more enjoyable. While it takes patience and consistency, the good news is that any dog can learn!

Why Do Dogs Pull on the Leash?

Pulling is a natural behavior for dogs. Here’s why they do it:
🐾 Excitement – The outdoors is full of interesting sights, smells, and sounds!
🐾 Lack of Training – Dogs don’t instinctively know that pulling doesn’t get them where they want to go.
🐾 Opposition Reflex – When they feel tension on the leash, their instinct is to pull harder.
🐾 Past Reinforcement – If pulling gets them closer to what they want (a tree, another dog, a person), they’ll keep doing it.

The key to loose leash walking is teaching your dog that walking calmly by your side is rewarding.

Step-by-Step Guide to Loose Leash Walking

1️⃣ Use the Right Equipment

Start with a comfortable, well-fitted harness (preferably one with a front-clip) and a flat collar. Avoid retractable leashes, as they encourage pulling. A 6-foot leash provides enough freedom while maintaining control.

2️⃣ Reinforce Good Behavior

Before you start walking, get your dog’s attention. Use treats, praise, or a favorite toy to reward them for staying by your side. Mark and reward every time they walk with a loose leash.

3️⃣ Stop When They Pull

If your dog pulls, stop immediately. Don’t yank the leash—just stand still. The moment they turn back or loosen the leash, reward them and continue walking.

4️⃣ Change Directions

Keep your dog engaged by frequently changing directions. If they start pulling ahead, turn and walk the other way. This teaches them to check in with you instead of charging forward.

5️⃣ Play Training Games

Make training fun! Games like “Follow Me” and “Red Light, Green Light” teach your dog that staying close to you is rewarding.

6️⃣ Stay Consistent

Loose leash walking doesn’t happen overnight. Practice in low-distraction areas before progressing to busier environments. The more consistent you are, the faster your dog will learn!
