It is a rare exception to find a person that does not feel rushed, stressed and overwhelmed during the holidays. But, some of us have the good fortune to live with dogs. Besides the myriad of mindfulness techniques available, I cannot think of a better way to find purpose, delight and de-stress than sharing my life with dogs. I have realized that the more quality time I spend with them (and yes, my client’s dogs too) the more joy I find in the ordinary. Below is a list of moments that often enough catch me by surprise as I find myself relaxing, laughing and grateful:
- Watching my dogs chewing on a bone, playing with each other, enjoying a toy or simply lying on their beds snoozing while I am working!
- When they approach me in asking – (okay, sometimes demand!) that I play with them, kick the ball, or open the front door to an adventure.
- While traveling – dogs in tow – and seeing new surroundings from their perspective.
- As I marveled at their ability to learn, especially when they are taught thoughtfully.
My list is constantly growing…
I invite you then, to find those moments where you too can interact more mindfully with your dog (s). To put aside worry, stress or what ails you. To invite purpose, connection and the joy of being alive. Let your Dog help you!
My best wishes for a peaceful & dog-centric new year and a joyful holiday season.
